To estimate annual gross income with variable pay, start with base earnings for the schedule you expect, then add overtime, bonus or commission as separate estimates. Keep guaranteed base pay distinct from amounts that depend on hours, sales, eligibility or future decisions.
Build the estimate from separate parts
For hourly work, multiply the entered hourly rate by expected hours and paid weeks. Then estimate variable components using the schedule or amounts you reasonably expect, rather than assuming they will repeat automatically.
Example: At $32 per hour, 40 hours per week and 48 paid weeks, base gross pay is $61,440. If a planning scenario adds four overtime hours in each of those 48 weeks at a selected 1.5 multiplier, that component is 4 × $32 × 1.5 × 48 = $9,216. Add an expected $2,000 bonus and the scenario totals $72,656 gross. The overtime and bonus are estimates, not guaranteed earnings.
To estimate the overtime portion separately, use the Overtime Pay Calculator with the hours and multiplier for your scenario.
For a separate breakdown of regular and overtime hours, see the overtime pay calculation guide.
Use scenarios when the amount is uncertain
Variable hours, unpaid time off, seasonal work, commission plans and bonuses can make one annual figure misleading. Make a conservative and an expected scenario if the inputs are uncertain. For commission, use the plan’s actual calculation method and a defensible sales assumption; do not treat a target or possible award as earned income.
Annual gross income is not take-home pay. Taxes, benefit deductions, unpaid leave and timing of payments are outside a simple annualized estimate. If you want to compare the gross equivalent of a salary and an hourly rate, see the existing salary-versus-hourly guide.
Apply the inputs in the calculator
Use the Annual Income Calculator to combine base pay with overtime and expected variable compensation. Enter each component according to its own schedule and review the assumptions before using the result for budgeting or a pay comparison.
