Surface & Measurement Details

Smooth drywall, plaster, or previously painted walls.
Measurement Scope
Exclude Openings & Cutouts
≈ 20 sq ft per door
≈ 15 sq ft per window
For sliding doors, french doors, archways, or non-standard glass.
Standard interior is ~350 sq ft/gal.

How to Use the Paint Calculator

  1. Pick Your Surface Type: Choose between Interior Wall, Ceiling, Trim / Baseboards, Exterior Fence, or Exterior Deck. The calculator automatically adjusts the default coverage rate to match the typical porosity of that surface.
  2. Enter Dimensions: For a full room, enter length and width (or wall perimeter) and ceiling height. For single accent walls, fences, or rectangular surfaces, select Single Surface and enter the length and height.
  3. Subtract Openings and Cutouts: Enter the number of standard doors (approx. 20 sq ft each) and standard windows (approx. 15 sq ft each). For sliding patio doors, archways, or picture windows, use the Custom Cutouts field to enter exact measured square footage.
  4. Choose Number of Coats & Coverage: Most interior painting projects require 2 coats for even opacity and color depth. Adjust the coverage per gallon based on your specific paint can label (typically 350–400 sq ft/gal for quality interior latex).

Formulas and Calculation Methods

The calculation follows professional painter estimating logic:

  • Gross Surface Area:
    For a full room: Gross Area = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height
For a single surface: Gross Area = Length × Height
For a ceiling: Gross Area = Length × Width
  • Net Paintable Area (Single Pass):
Net Area = Gross Area − (Doors × 20 sq ft) − (Windows × 15 sq ft) − Custom Cutouts
  • Total Coated Surface Area:
Total Coated Area = Net Area × Number of Coats
  • Total Gallons Needed:
Gallons = ⌈ Total Coated Area ÷ Coverage per Gallon ⌉ (rounded up to next whole gallon).

Two Real-World Worked Examples

Example 1: Standard Bedroom (All Four Walls)

Painting all four walls of a 12 ft × 10 ft bedroom with 8 ft ceilings, 1 standard door, 2 standard windows, applying 2 coats of paint at 350 sq ft/gallon coverage:

  • Wall Perimeter: 2 × (12 + 10) = 44 ft
  • Gross Wall Area: 44 ft × 8 ft = 352 sq ft
  • Cutout Deductions: (1 door × 20) + (2 windows × 15) = 20 + 30 = 50 sq ft
  • Net Single-Coat Area: 352 − 50 = 302 sq ft
  • Total Coated Area (2 coats): 302 sq ft × 2 = 604 sq ft
  • Gallons Required: 604 ÷ 350 = 1.73 → 2 Gallons (with a 96 sq ft safety buffer).

Example 2: Exterior Wood Privacy Fence (One Side)

Staining or painting one side of a 40 ft long by 6 ft tall rough cedar fence with a single coat at 250 sq ft/gallon (rough unprimed wood absorbs significantly more product):

  • Gross Surface Area: 40 ft × 6 ft = 240 sq ft
  • Cutout Deductions: 0 sq ft
  • Total Coated Area (1 coat): 240 sq ft
  • Gallons Required: 240 ÷ 250 = 0.96 → 1 Gallon.

Surface Texture & Coverage Guidelines

Textured Drywall / Plaster300 – 350 sq ft / galThicker nap roller (3/8" to 1/2")
Interior Trim, Doors & Baseboards380 – 420 sq ft / galSemi-gloss or satin enamel
Exterior Smooth Wood / Siding280 – 350 sq ft / gal1 coat primer + 2 coats exterior latex
Rough-Sawn Wood, Fences & Shakes200 – 250 sq ft / galAbsorbs heavy volume; exterior stain or solid latex
Porous Brick, Concrete & Stucco150 – 200 sq ft / galMasonry primer required; 3/4" heavy nap roller

Assumptions & Important Limitations

  • Door & Window Averages: The default deductions (20 sq ft per door, 15 sq ft per window) represent standard American interior residential doors (approx. 30" × 80") and double-hung windows (approx. 36" × 60"). For large picture windows or sliding patio glass, measure the exact opening dimensions and enter the sum in Custom Cutouts.
  • Primer Not Included: If you are changing color drastically (e.g. dark navy to off-white), painting raw drywall, or covering stains, primer must be calculated as a separate pass. Primer generally covers 250–300 sq ft per gallon.
  • Application Method Variations: Using an airless paint sprayer typically requires 20% to 30% more paint volume than rolling due to overspray and atomization transfer loss.
  • Material Cost: This calculator provides physical coverage quantities. It does not calculate product pricing, sundries (tape, drop cloths, brushes), or contractor labor rates.

Mandatory Disclaimer

This calculator provides a directional estimate of paint volume based on the surface dimensions and coverage rate you supply. Actual coverage varies across paint brands, formulas, sheen levels, surface porosity, and painter technique. Always retain your receipt — unopened paint cans can usually be returned to the store if unused.
