Result Interpretation: Footprint vs. True Sloped Area
- Ground Footprint Area: Calculated as simple
length × width. This represents the flat, bird's-eye view outline of the building walls. It should never be used directly for ordering shingles, decking, or underlayment because it ignores the incline of the roof. - Adjusted Footprint (With Overhang): Overhangs extend past exterior walls at both eaves and gable rakes. An 18-inch overhang adds 36 inches (3 feet) to both length and width, significantly expanding the roof's horizontal boundary before slope pitch is applied.
- Sloped Roof Area: Multiplies the horizontal area by the geometric slope pitch factor (
√(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²)). Because a pitched surface is diagonal, it always contains more surface area than its horizontal base. A 6:12 pitch expands area by 11.8%, while a steep 12:12 pitch expands surface area by over 41.4%. - Roofing Squares: Divides the true sloped area by 100. One roofing "square" equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Contractors, insurance adjusters, and lumber suppliers price and order materials by the square.

- Measure building footprint: Enter exterior wall length and width in feet.
- Specify roof pitch: Enter your x:12 pitch rise (e.g. 6 for 6:12). If you don't know it, measure rise and run first using the Roof Pitch Calculator.
- Add eaves overhang: Check the overhang option and enter your soffit/eaves depth in inches (typically 12" to 18").
- Read true sloped square footage: Read your exact sloped surface area and total roofing squares in the results panel.

Real-World Worked Examples
Example 1: Simple Roof Without Overhang
A rectangular workshop with a 40 ft × 30 ft footprint, 6:12 pitch, and flush eaves:
- Footprint: 40 ft × 30 ft = 1,200 sq ft
- Slope Factor:
√(1 + (6 ÷ 12)²) = √1.25 ≈ 1.11803 - Sloped Area:
1,200 × 1.11803 ≈ 1,342 sq ft - Roofing Squares:
1,342 ÷ 100 = 13.42 squares - Result: 1,342 sq ft (13.42 squares)
Example 2: Same Footprint with Steep Pitch & Overhang
The same 40 ft × 30 ft building framed with a 10:12 pitch and an 18-inch perimeter overhang:
- Adjusted Dimensions:
40 + (2 × 1.5) = 43 ftby30 + (2 × 1.5) = 33 ft - Adjusted Footprint:
43 × 33 = 1,419 sq ft - Slope Factor:
√(1 + (10 ÷ 12)²) = √1.6944 ≈ 1.3017 - Sloped Area:

Assumptions & Edge-Case Limitations
- Single Uniform Pitch: Assumes a constant slope across the roof plane being measured. For homes with multiple additions, dormers, or varying pitches (e.g. 8:12 main house with a 4:12 porch), calculate each plane section separately and add the square footages together.
- Symmetrical Overhang: Eaves and gable rakes are assumed to have identical overhang depths on all four sides. If front and rear eaves differ from gable ends, compute adjusted footprint dimensions manually.
- Surface Area Only: This tool calculates physical roof deck surface area. It does not calculate shingle bundles, hip/valley waste allowances, or starter strips. Use the companion Roofing Material Calculator once your area is established.
- Standard Geometry: Highly complex, curved, conical, or multi-faceted mansard roofs require on-site architectural measurements or aerial satellite takeoff reports.
