  • Static QR Codes (What FivoTools Generates): The raw payload (such as https://example.com or your home Wi-Fi password) is converted directly into the 2D pattern. When a phone scans the symbol, the camera app reads the characters directly off the print and visits the link immediately. No middleman server exists. Advantage: Completely free forever, zero vendor lock-in, zero scan limits, and private. Limitation: Once printed, the destination URL cannot be edited.
  • Dynamic QR Codes: The QR code encodes a proprietary short link owned by a SaaS company (e.g. https://vendor.io/qr/9x81). When scanned, the user hits the vendor's server first, which logs the scan and redirects to the final page. Advantage: Destination can be redirected later. Danger: If the vendor goes out of business, charges a monthly subscription, or imposes scan quotas, your printed QR codes will stop working.

Printing & Sizing Best Practices

To ensure reliable scanning across older smartphones, budget Android devices, and low-light environments, observe these three industry rules:

  1. The 10:1 Scanning Distance Rule: As a practical rule of thumb, the physical width of your printed QR code should be approximately 1/10th of the intended scanning distance. For a business card held 10 inches away, a 1-inch (25mm) code scans easily. For a billboard or wall poster scanned from 10 feet away, print the code at least 12 inches (30cm) wide.
  2. The 4-Module Quiet Zone: Every scannable QR code requires a clear, unprinted margin around its entire perimeter equal to at least 4 module widths.
