Estimated drywall sheets
Enter project measurements to see your sheet estimate
Use actual dimensions, add any meaningful openings, and select the panel size you plan to use. Complete or correct highlighted fields to restore the estimate.
The estimate updates as you enter valid measurements.
How to use the drywall calculator
- Add each room, wall, ceiling or measured area that will receive new drywall.
- Enter the actual dimensions and choose whether a room ceiling is included.
- Record meaningful doors, windows and other openings by their measured dimensions or area.
- Choose the panel size you plan to use, including a custom size if needed.
- Set an optional material allowance if it suits the project, then review the sheet estimate.
- Optionally estimate fasteners, tape, compound and outside-corner bead using rates or product coverage you enter.
- Add current prices if you want an entered-price material estimate, then copy or download the takeoff.
The sheet result is an area-based material estimate. Actual panel layout, framing and assembly requirements can change the final quantity.
How to calculate drywall area for a room
For a rectangular room, the calculator finds the wall surface area with wall area = 2 × (length + width) × wall height. If you include the ceiling, it adds ceiling area = length × width. It subtracts only the openings you enter. Room openings are deducted from wall area, not from the ceiling.
Measure actual doors, windows or other meaningful openings. A door or window does not have a fixed area, so use its dimensions or enter a directly measured opening area. Small electrical boxes and pipe penetrations are not automatically deducted.
Measuring individual walls and flat surfaces
Separate wall entries help when heights differ, only some walls are being replaced, a room is not rectangular, or partitions are included. For an individual wall, gross wall area = length × height × quantity. The opening quantities you enter represent all openings in that grouped area.
For a ceiling or other flat surface, use gross area = length × width × quantity. Add a measured exclusion such as an attic hatch only when it will not receive drywall. Lights, vents and electrical boxes are not automatically subtracted.
Use Known area for a measured surface, plan takeoff or irregular shape instead of turning it into an assumed rectangle. Choose whether the known area belongs to walls or ceilings so the result can keep those totals separate.
Drywall sheet sizes and coverage
A panel's geometric area is its width multiplied by its length. For example, a 4 × 8 ft panel covers 32 ft² geometrically, a 4 × 10 ft panel covers 40 ft², and a 4 × 12 ft panel covers 48 ft². The U.S. presets are conveniences; products and lengths available vary by manufacturer and location. Custom panel dimensions are supported.
USG's Sheetrock® Brand product information lists 48-inch-wide panels in several lengths for particular products. This is an example of product-specific availability, not a promise that every panel type is sold in every size. USG Sheetrock® Brand Gypsum Panels
In Metric mode, enter custom panel width and length in millimetres. The calculator converts dimensions when you switch systems; it does not assume universal Metric panel presets.
How the drywall sheet count is calculated
net area = gross area − entered openings
raw sheet equivalent = net area ÷ panel area
planning area = net area × (1 + allowance/100)
estimated sheets = ceiling(planning area ÷ panel area)
Calculations retain full precision until display. The whole panel quantity is rounded up. Purchased sheet coverage is the whole sheet count times the area of one selected panel. Nominal excess sheet coverage is purchased coverage above the calculated net area; some may be usable offcuts.
The optional material allowance starts at 0%. It can represent cuts, offcuts, damage or layout-specific needs when you choose a value. It is not a universal requirement. For example only, entering 10% for the worked project below changes planning area from 427 ft² to 469.7 ft² and the 4 × 8 ft count from 14 to 15 sheets. The 10% figure is an example input, not a recommendation.
Worked example: 12 × 10 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling
This geometry example includes the ceiling, one 3 × 7 ft door, two 3 × 4 ft windows, 4 × 8 ft panels and 0% allowance.
- Gross wall area:
2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 352 ft² - Ceiling area:
12 × 10 = 120 ft² - Gross total:
352 + 120 = 472 ft² - Openings:
3 × 7 + 2 × (3 × 4) = 45 ft² - Net drywall area:
472 − 45 = 427 ft² - Panel area:
4 × 8 = 32 ft²; raw equivalent:427 ÷ 32 = 13.34375 - Estimated sheets:
ceiling(13.34375) = 14; purchased coverage:14 × 32 = 448 ft² - Nominal excess sheet coverage:
448 − 427 = 21 ft²
Why screws, tape and joint compound are estimates
Sheet area alone does not determine fastener count, tape length or compound use. Those quantities change with framing, panel orientation, joint count, fastening schedule, finish level, product and assembly requirements. The optional estimators therefore use editable planning rates and product coverage rather than a universal default.
For fasteners, enter separate wall and ceiling planning rates per 100 ft² or per 100 m². The calculator applies each rate to the corresponding net area after the selected allowance. It does not derive screw count from framing spacing. USG publishes installation guidance and quantity examples for particular Sheetrock® systems; the instructions for the actual product and assembly should be followed. Tested or fire-rated assemblies may specify different materials and fastening schedules. See the USG Sheetrock® Brand Installation and Finishing Guide.
For joint compound, enter the coverage for the actual product and finish system. The estimate is containers = ceiling(planning area ÷ entered coverage per container). The container size or label is recorded for the report only.
Tape follows joints, so an area-based tape rate is a planning estimate rather than an exact seam takeoff. Enter a rate and roll length; the calculator rounds the estimated roll count up. A precise tape takeoff would need the actual joint layout.
Outside-corner bead is based only on the total outside-corner length you enter. A room count does not imply a bead quantity. Add a piece length if you want a whole-piece estimate.
How drywall material cost is estimated
The cost summary multiplies the whole sheets or enabled material packages by the prices you enter. It can show sheet, fastener-package, compound-container, tape-roll, corner-bead and other entered costs. If an enabled item has no price, the page shows a priced-materials subtotal and the number of unpriced items instead of presenting an incomplete total as complete. Currency only formats amounts; there is no exchange-rate conversion or live price lookup.
Costs do not include labor, delivery, taxes, framing, insulation, primer, paint, tools, demolition, disposal, permits or other project expenses.
What this estimate does not determine
This tool is a material takeoff estimator, not structural design, fire-rated assembly or building-code compliance software. It does not optimize physical panel layout or select panel type, thickness, fastener type, framing spacing, finish level, moisture-resistant product, sound assembly, control joints or vapor/moisture design. Actual layout, orientation, short sections, soffits, angled surfaces, stairwells, opening details and assembly instructions can change quantities. It does not estimate labor or fetch current prices.
Drywall calculator questions
How many sheets of drywall do I need?
Subtract the openings you measured from gross area, apply any allowance you choose, divide by the selected panel area and round up to a whole sheet. This area-based result does not optimize a panel layout.
How many square feet does a 4 × 8 drywall sheet cover?
Its geometric area is 32 ft²: 4 ft multiplied by 8 ft.
How many square feet does a 4 × 12 sheet cover?
Its geometric area is 48 ft²: 4 ft multiplied by 12 ft.
Should I subtract windows and doors?
You can subtract meaningful openings that will not receive drywall by entering their actual measured dimensions or direct area. The calculator does not assume standard door or window sizes.
Does the calculator include the ceiling?
Room mode lets you choose whether to include the ceiling. Its openings are deducted from wall area only. Ceiling / flat surface mode can be entered separately.
How much extra drywall should I buy?
There is no allowance that fits every project. If useful, enter a project-specific percentage based on cuts, layout, offcuts, damage risk and other circumstances.
How many drywall screws do I need?
Fastener quantity depends on the panel layout, framing and applicable product or assembly instructions. The optional estimator uses the wall and ceiling planning rates you enter; it does not claim a universal screw schedule.
How much joint compound do I need?
Use the coverage for the compound product and finish system you plan to use. The calculator divides planning area by your entered coverage and rounds up whole containers.
Is Sheetrock the same as drywall?
Sheetrock® is a USG brand of gypsum panel products. “Drywall” is the general material or category term used by this calculator.
Can I use Metric units?
Yes. Choose Metric to convert entered dimensions, openings, areas and planning-rate bases while preserving their physical quantities. Enter custom panel dimensions in millimetres.
