Work & Pay Calculators
Figure out your hours, your rate, and what a raise actually changes about your paycheck. Start with your time card to log hours worked, then move to Salary ↔ Hourly to see what that translates to per hour, or Pay Raise to evaluate the bottom-line effect of a merit or promotion increase.

Essential Payroll Principles & Industry Benchmarks
The 2,080-Hour Annual Benchmark
The standard full-time working year in the United States and international payroll accounting is defined as2,080 working hours. This figure is derived from multiplying standard full-time weekly hours by the 52 weeks in a calendar year:
40 hours/week × 52 weeks/year = 2,080 hours/year
If you receive paid time off (PTO), paid holidays, and paid sick leave, your annualized divisor remains 2,080 hours. However, if you are a freelance 1099 contractor, seasonal employee, or take unpaid leave (e.g., 2 weeks unpaid), your billable annual working hours decrease to 2,000 hours (40 × 50), which increases the hourly rate required to yield the same total annual earnings.
Biweekly (26 Checks) vs. Semi-Monthly (24 Checks)
One of the most frequent payroll misconceptions is treating biweekly and semi-monthly pay interchangeably. While both result in roughly two paychecks per month, the mathematical schedule is distinct:
- Biweekly Pay (26 Paychecks/Year): Employees receive pay every two weeks (typically alternating Fridays). Because 52 weeks divided by 2 equals 26, there are 26 pay periods per year. In two months of every calendar year, workers receive three paychecks rather than two.
- Semi-Monthly Pay (24 Paychecks/Year): Employees are paid twice per calendar month (commonly on the 1st and 15th, or 15th and last business day). This yields exactly 24 pay periods per year (
12 × 2). Because there are fewer paychecks, each semi-monthly check is approximately 8.3% larger than a biweekly check for the identical annual salary.
Decimal Hours vs. Minute Formats
Time cards must be converted into decimal hours before multiplying by an hourly wage. A common error is entering 8 hours and 15 minutes as 8.15 rather than the mathematically correct 8.25 hours:
| Minutes Worked | Fraction of an Hour | Decimal Hour Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 15 minutes | 15 / 60 = 1/4 | 0.25 hours |
| 30 minutes | 30 / 60 = 1/2 | 0.50 hours |
| 45 minutes | 45 / 60 = 3/4 | 0.75 hours |
| 6 minutes (1/10th) | 6 / 60 = 1/10 | 0.10 hours |
