Formulas and Mathematical Methods

FivoTools uses exact standard payroll arithmetic without intermediate rounding. Final values are rounded to standard two-decimal currency display:

  • Total Working Hours per Year:
Annual Working Hours = Hours per Week × Weeks per Year
    Standard full-time benchmark: 40 hrs/wk × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours.
  • Salary to Hourly Wage:
Hourly Rate = Annual Salary / Annual Working Hours
    Example: $65,000 / 2,080 hrs = $31.25 / hour.
  • Hourly Wage to Annual Salary:
Annual Salary = Hourly Rate × Hours per Week × Weeks per Year
    Example: $35.00 / hr × 40 hrs/wk × 52 wks = $72,800 / year.
  • Accounting for Unpaid Leave / Vacation:
If you take 2 weeks of unpaid leave (working 50 weeks instead of 52), your annual hours decrease to 2,000 hours. To earn a gross salary of $65,000 across 50 working weeks, your equivalent hourly rate must be $65,000 / 2,000 = $32.50 / hour.

Worked Comparison Examples

Example 1: Converting a $65,000 Annual Salary

Assuming a standard 40-hour workweek over 52 paid weeks per year (2,080 working hours):

TimeframeCalculation FormulaGross Compensation
Hourly$65,000 / 2,080 hours$31.25 / hr
Daily (5 days/wk)$1,250 / 5 days$250.00 / day
Weekly (40 hrs)$65,000 / 52 weeks$1,250.00 / wk
Biweekly (26 checks)$65,000 / 26 periods$2,500.00 / check
Semi-Monthly (24 checks)$65,000 / 24 periods$2,708.33 / check
Monthly$65,000 / 12 months$5,416.67 / mo
Quarterly$65,000 / 4 quarters$16,250.00 / qtr
AnnuallyBase Salary$65,000.00 / yr

Example 2: Converting $35.00/Hour to Annual Salary

If you receive a contractor or hourly offer of $35.00/hr and work 40 hours per week:

  • Standard 52 paid weeks: $35.00 × 40 × 52 = $72,800.00 gross annual salary.
  • With 2 weeks unpaid time off (50 weeks): $35.00 × 40 × 50 = $70,000.00 gross annual income.

Assumptions and Important Limitations

  • Gross Pre-Tax Earnings: All figures represent gross compensation before payroll taxes (federal, state, and local income taxes), FICA withholdings (Social Security & Medicare), health insurance premiums, or pre-tax retirement accounts (401k/IRA).
  • Exempt vs. Non-Exempt Status: Salaried exempt workers generally do not receive overtime pay regardless of hours worked. Non-exempt hourly workers are entitled under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to 1.5× overtime for hours worked exceeding 40 hours per week.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO): In salaried roles with paid holidays, sick time, and vacation, total annual hours remain 2,080 because time off is paid. For independent contractors (1099) or hourly roles without paid leave, adjust Weeks per Year to reflect only billable working weeks.
