How to Calculate How Much Carpet You Need
Broadloom carpeting cannot simply be measured as raw floor square footage. Unlike hardwood planks or vinyl tiles that come in small modular cartons, wall-to-wall carpeting is manufactured and shipped in massive continuous rolls-most commonly 12 feet wide (and occasionally 15 feet wide).
When ordering carpet, you are purchasing linear feet cut directly from that fixed-width roll. If your room is 10 feet wide, you must still purchase 12 feet of carpet width and trim off the 2-foot excess. Conversely, if your room is 14 feet wide, a 12-foot roll cannot cover the space in a single piece: an installer must cut multiple strips and heat-tape a long seam down your room.
Square Feet to Square Yards: The Industry Standard
In North America, carpet and underlay padding are historically priced and sold in Square Yards:
Square Yards Formula:
Square Yards = Square Footage ÷ 9
Because 1 yard = 3 feet, a square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 square feet.
For example, if your total required carpet coverage (including roll cut waste) is 270 square feet, you will order 270 ÷ 9 = 30 square yards.
12-Foot vs. 15-Foot Broadloom Rolls
Selecting the proper roll width determines whether your room has seamless wall-to-wall coverage or visible seams:

The Importance of Carpet Pile Direction (Nap Sweep)
When carpets are tufted, the yarn fibers naturally angle in one direction, known as the pile direction or nap.
When two pieces of carpet are seamed together in a room, both pieces must face the exact same pile direction. If one piece is turned 90 or 180 degrees to utilize scrap material, light reflection will make the two pieces appear as completely different shades of color, creating an unsightly, glaring line down the middle of your floor. This fundamental rule means installers cannot always turn offcut remnants sideways, requiring deliberate linear roll allowance.
Pattern Repeat Waste Factors
Solid plush and textured loop carpets often start with a lower planning allowance. If you choose a carpet with an embossed geometric grid, trellis, or floral pattern, cross-seams may need extra material for alignment.
- Small Geometric Pattern (< 6″ repeat): A 15% planning scenario may be useful; confirm the actual repeat with the installer.
- Large Damask / Trellis Pattern (12″ to 24″ repeat): A 20% planning scenario may be useful, but the final allowance depends on room dimensions and pattern matching.
