The Zero-Guess Principle

Online calculators often suffer from silent approximation errors: formulas copied from unverified blog posts, undocumented rounding rules, or hardcoded assumptions that do not reflect physical reality or legal regulations.

At FivoTools, we operate under a permanent zero-guess calculation policy. Before any calculator is coded:

  1. We identify the underlying mathematical, physical, or statutory formula from authoritative primary sources.
  2. We document every assumption, conversion factor, and physical density explicitly.
  3. We create known-value test fixtures with verified inputs and expected outputs.
  4. We implement pure calculation engines isolated from UI presentation.
  5. We independently audit edge cases, including zero values, boundary limits, and extreme inputs.

Three-Tier Source Hierarchy

To ensure consistency across categories, FivoTools references information using a strict tiered authority structure:

Tier A — Official & Primary Sources

Primary regulatory publications, statutory codes, official tax authority notices, national standards institutes, and primary manufacturer technical specifications:

  • IRS Bulletins & Notices: Used for standard business, medical, and charitable mileage rates.
  • Department of Labor & FLSA Rules: Used for overtime threshold definitions and 40-hour regular workweek boundaries.
  • ASTM & International Building Codes: Used for standard construction lumber dimensions, pitch formulas, and slope factors.

Tier B — First-Party Product Testing & Verification

Direct mathematical proofs, peer-reviewed algorithms, automated unit tests, and verified user error reports analyzed by our engineering team.

Tier C — Established Industry Estimates

Practical directional benchmarks where natural variation occurs (e.g., aggregate gravel density, typical paint coverage per gallon, and standard carpet roll widths).

Precision, Rounding & Unit Rules

Calculation accuracy requires rigorous floating-point discipline:

  • Full Internal Precision: Intermediate mathematical steps retain full native precision. We never round partial numbers inside a calculation chain, as compounding rounding errors distort final quantities.
  • Final Display Rounding: Output values are rounded only at the final display step according to standard conventions (e.g., two decimal places for currency, whole integers with ceiling behavior for purchasable material units like boards, bundles, and bags).
  • Ceiling Behavior for Purchasable Units: You cannot purchase half a bundle of shingles or half a bag of concrete. Our tools calculate exact mathematical requirements first, then provide whole-unit recommendations with configurable waste buffers.

Review Cadence & False Freshness Policy

Rules and regulatory rates change over time. Rate- and rule-based calculators (such as IRS mileage rates and statutory pay thresholds) are audited quarterly or whenever regulatory updates occur.

No Manufactured Freshness: We do not automatically update page "last reviewed" timestamps to give search engines an illusion of artificial freshness. A review date changes only when our team has materially audited or updated the underlying formula, content, or reference data.
